Here’s an editorial I wrote for class. I think that this is very important and under-discussed:
Capital City Stadium: It’s been here since 1945 and is the home of small-time baseball team the Columbia Blowfish.
Unfortunately, it seems like the days of this historic stadium are coming to a close. Columbia’s City Council has drawn up a contract with Atlanta-based developers Bright-Meyers LLC.
What is this company planning to do? Well, while this might come as a shocker, its intentions are not to run a ballpark. Because of the firm’s affiliations and past contracts, the public has inferred that Bright-Meyers plans to build a Walmart in the heart of the downtown area.
So a Walmart will be downtown—what’s the big deal? Columbia is a college town and the student population would greatly benefit from such a resource.
Actually, it is a big deal for a number of reasons. I could write all-day about the egregious exploits that Walmart has committed against communities, their own employees and local farms. Instead, I’ll stick to the detrimental effects that this will bring to Columbia.
Keep local businesses alive and keep Walmart out of downtown Columbia.
Check it. It’s well-written...important, so you have no excuse
Columbia, SC or not....community they serve. A message relevant regardless
